Speaking about Local
Carpet gathering with Sally Schonfeldt & Shirin Yousefi
20:00
Sally Schonfeldt investigates womens’ participation within revolutionary struggles, such as the female Fritischi Circle within the anarchist movement of the 1880s and Alexandra Kollontai's role in the Russian Revolution in 1917, while the backdrop to her piece at Kunsthalle Zürich depicts something more contemporary: a present-day demonstration in Zurich by the political Kurdish women’s association Beritan. Kurdistan is also a point of reference for Shirin Yousefi, whose artwork is made up of smells and sounds reminiscent of the region, and diffused throughout the exhibition spaces.
Together with Kunsthalle Zürich’s exhibition manager Rebecka Domig, the two artists will speak about their individual artistic practice, discuss their artworks' political premise and reflect on their understanding of heritage and locality: A personal conversation held as an informal carpet gathering between all who come together.
The activist and journalist Hevi Raperin will be present to help contextualize the political situation in Kurdish regions and for Kurdish people.
The event will be held in English.
