Arcane Emitters
Ryosuke Kiyasu and MSHR
21 March, 2023, 9pm
Culture provides us with examples of heroes with magic music instruments in all manner of fields (mythology, opera, computer games, etc.). Often associated with ritual sound, in the hands of the rightful player the instrument becomes their main attribute. Most of all, it’s their status as solo instruments that gives them their spiritual charge. Their unaccompanied music does the trick of unifying, healing, transforming time or awakening. We look forward to magical performances by Ryosuke Kiyasu on his snare drum and MSHR, employing their self-made instruments.
Ryosuke Kiyasu has been performing as a solo musician since 2003, usually armed only with a snare drum. Also known as the drummer of his own band SETE STAR SEPT, the Kiyasu Orchestra and as a former founding member of The Endless Blockade, he has played drums for Keiji Haino's Fushitsusha, among others, for over 10 years. More than 200 works have been released by various labels around the world.
The art collective MSHR consists of Birch Cooper and Brenna Murphy. The duo collaboratively builds their own instruments and explores sculptural electronic systems that primarily take the form of performances and installations. Their performances revolve around analog synthesizers and computer music systems of their own design that are played in feedback with lights and movement. Their installations involve generative electronic systems embedded in immersive sculptural arrays.
The event is a collaboration between Backrooms and the label Czarnagora, which operates internationally and also makes an important contribution to Zurich's small underground music scene.
