Sandbag, 2017

Signed and numbered
Edition: 200

Rob Pruitt designed the patrons' edition exclusively for Kunsthalle Zürich in 2017. The edition consists of a sandbag that is reminiscent of the bags often found on the streets of New York. There, the bags filled with sand are used to weigh down street signs and traffic signals, making them steadfast against wind and weather. These helpers of the everyday are seldom looked at by the passers-by – until now, elevated to High Art as they are by Rob Pruitt. He has designed eight bags, which combine a photograph of sandy landscapes with a saying about sand. As everyone knows: when we talk about sand, we really mean time... as all sayings confirm:

„Nothing is built on stone; all is built on sand, but we must build as if the sand were stone.“ Jorge Luis Borges

„The sands of time are quicksands... so much can sink into them without a trace.“ - Margaret Atwood

„Love is like an hourglass, with the heart filling up as the brain empties.“ - Jules Renard

„Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and, departing, leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time.“ - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

„The more sand has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it.“ - Johan Paul Friedrich Richter

„We have a definite but unknown quantity of experience at our disposal. As soon as the hourglass is turned, the sand will begin to run out and once it starts, it cannot stop until it’s all gone.“ - Pablo Picasso

„Our lives are but specks of dust falling through the fingers of time. Like sand of the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.“ - Socrates

„Time is like a handful of sand, the tighter you grasp it, the faster it runs through your fingers.“ - Henry David Thoreau
