Booklaunch: David Armstrong Contacts

Photographer David Armstrong (1954–2014) spent his life on the East Coast of the United States capturing his creative peers in intimate, direct portraits. Known as one of the Boston School, which also included close friend Nan Goldin, before his death Armstrong entrusted his archive to a group of colleagues. After extensive preparation, this archive was first revealed in exhibitions at Kunsthalle Zürich in 2024 and LUMA Arles in 2025.
To launch the exhibition catalogue Contacts, which allows readers in-depth insights into Armstrong’s contact sheets, Daniel Baumann, former director of Kunsthalle Zürich, will be in conversation with artist Wade Guyton, who co-curated both exhibitions. The contact sheets allow viewers to trace Armstrong’s working methods and a heady milieu featuring Goldin, Cookie Mueller, Mark Morrisroe, Rene Ricard, Gary Indiana, Jack Pierson, Tabboo! (Stephen Tashjian), Christopher Wool, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Teri Toye, Greer Lankton, Johnny Thunders and others.
With thanks to LUMA Westbau. At the event the publication will be available for the special price of CHF 45.
