Benjamin Dillenburger and Tiziano Derme of the Chair for Digital Building Technologies (dbt), Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) invite Oliver Domeisen and Marjan Colletti to discuss the 'hard and soft truth' of architecture.

'To look at buildings with honesty and to present their inherent nature as being constituted of structural (hard) and ornamental (soft) surfaces.'

This conversation takes place in the context of the exhibition AAA Experiments. These talks are public and free, and take place on Thursdays between the 10 October and the 19 December 2024.

This talk will take place in English and is moderated by Benjamin Dillenburger.

Tiziano Derme is an architect, artist and researcher at the Chair for Digital Building Technologies (dbt), Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on the integration of biotechnologies and enzymatic processes into Architecture and the construction industry. His works have exhibited in various galleries, events, and institutions such as the Biennale of Venice, Seoul Biennale, Ars Electronica, Melbourne Triennale. Tiziano is also a visiting scientist at EMPA in the Bio-Engineered Wood group and the the co-founder and director of the transdisciplinary design practice named MAEID Büro für Architektur und transmediale Kunst.

Oliver Domeisen AADipl is a London-based Swiss architect, ornamentalist, curator, and academic. He is a History & Theory Lecturer and Diploma Thesis advisor at UCL Bartlett and has taught BArch and MArch design studios at the Architectural Association, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and Innsbruck University. As an affiliated researcher for Innsbruck University's Post-digital Neobaroque project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund, and through ETH Zurich’s MAS in Architecture and Digital Fabrication, he investigates the aesthetic context of human-robot interfacing and historic digital manufacturing paradigms. A former project architect for Zaha Hadid, he curated Re-sampling Ornament at the Swiss Architecture Museum Basel and exhibitions for the V&A. As director of dlm Ltd, he designed exhibitions, furniture, and architecture internationally. He lectures and publishes internationally.

Marjan Colletti serves as Chair Professor of Architecture and Postdigital Practice (the first worldwide) and of Building Design and Construction at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL. Academic achievements include chairing the Department of Experimental Architecture at Innsbruck University and founding its robotic experimentation lab REX|LAB, co-directing the MArch Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2), directing computing, and directing design-research at The Bartlett School of UCL London, guest and visiting professorships at UCLA and UTA (USA), Vienna Technical and China. He has exhibited over 100 times in international venues, has work in the permanent collection in France, Italy, Germany and the UK. He publishes and lectures regularly on design-research and research-led education, and acts as scientific reviewer for major funding bodies in the EU, UK, CH, USA, UAE, AUS, CA, RU, IL, CY, HK, EG...

Benjamin Dillenburger is an Architect and Professor for Digital Building Technologies at the Institute of Technology In Architecture (ITA) at the Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich. His research focuses on the development of building technologies based on the close interplay of computational design methods, digital fabrication and new materials. In this context, he searches for ways to exploit the potential of additive manufacturing for building construction. He previously was appointed as Assistant Professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto, and worked as a senior lecturer in the CAAD group at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology’s architecture department in Zurich. He holds a Master of Advanced Study degree from ETH Zurich and a Master of Architecture Degree from the Technical University Kaiserslautern.
