Opening Scalable Skeletal Escalator / Fleshy Interface

The opening of the exhibition Scalable Skeletal Escalator takes place on Wednesday, 23 September 2020, from 6–9 pm. Performance will be ongoing throughout this time; the number of viewers in each space will be limited, so early arrival is advisable. Should you have to wait, we will ensure this time is also pleasantly spent!

The opening takes place within the framework of the festival Fleshy Interface. The festival, which takes place across several institutions, brings together performance, workshops and discussion on the subjects of corporeality and contact.

The «Fleshy Interface» opening festival, which takes place across several institutions, brings together performance, workshops and discussion on the subjects of corporeality and contact. In these peculiar times of physical distancing the body as medium and instrument in visual arts, the digital body, immateriality and the desire to touch and be touched all come to the fore: «Skin-tight politics, a politic that takes as its orientation not the body as such, but the fleshy interface between bodies and worlds.» (Sara Ahmed)

As the interface between bodies and the world, skin is boundary and transition, protects us and is vulnerable, carries the scars of our experiences and, not least, marks political and social conflict. Like skin, screens demarcate worlds and became our contact areas with the world during lockdown. Boundaries are regulated, encounters are regimented, and skin, flesh and the body are stigmatised and politicised. «Fleshy Interface» goes in search of common points of contact, puts the body centre stage and speaks out in favour of a notion of contamination through collaboration and encounter. Cultural institutions in Zürich draw together and realise a week-long festival of encounters.

Initiated by Neumarkt in collaboration with Cabaret Voltaire, Fabriktheater, Gessnerallee, Helferei, Kunsthalle Zürich, Literaturhaus, Schauspielhaus, Shedhalle, Tanzhaus, Theater Winkelwiese and the ZHdK.
