(CANCELLED) Gilbert & George Family Afternoon

Mit Seline Fülscher (Kunstvermittlerin)

08.03.2020
15:00–17:00

Gilbert (b. 1941) and George (b. 1942) are, in their own words "Two persons but one artist". The ever elegantly turned out, suit-wearing gentlemen have worked together since they met at St. Martins School of Art.

At Kunsthalle Zürich we are, together with Luma Westbau, presenting the retrospective show THE GREAT EXHIBITION, 1971-2016. More than 60 works created over the past five decades will be on display. In monumental, bright, ecclesiastical style-photography works the artist pair present themselves as a living sculpture, for 'Art is life and is truth'. Their work is about death, hope, life, fear, sex, death, race and religion. For half a century Gilbert & George have been outspoken opponents of discrimination of all kinds, particularly against homosexuals. They fight for freedom and against dishonesty, they break taboos and challenge the (Catholic) church and its ethics.

A playful tour for adults with children from 4 years old:

We choose a topic and decide how to portray ourselves as elegant, glamourous icons in a family photograph. This will be enlarged on a photocopier then rearranged and decorated with printed material. The collage will be complemented with drawn, typographic and painting elements. Mottos and sentences will be integrated that fit with the topic conceived together. Using the artists' example, we will in this way develop a large-scale artwork that the family can take home at the end.

Gilbert & George: THE GREAT EXHIBITION, 1971-2016. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Daniel Birnbaum. Produced and organised by the Luma Foundation and Moderna Museet (Stockholm) in collaboration with Luma Westbau and the Kunsthalle Zürich.

Cost: CHF 25 per family (for up to 5 people, additional family members CHF 5)
